The HTC Imagio is Verizon’s best smartphone in a long time. It’s Verizon’s first device to come with Windows Mobile 6.5 out of the box. It’s also the first smartphone to feature genuine broadcast mobile TV. Overall, the Imagio is a powerful touchscreen device for business-minded globetrotters who value multimedia performance, as well as compatibility with Microsoft’s Exchange and Office-based ecosystem.
Design and Call Quality
At 4.7 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and 5.3 ounces, the Imagio feels well crafted, if heavy. HTC fashioned the Imagio in glass, black plastic, and black rubber that’s textured in spots. The design looks professional, albeit a little busy. The expansive, 3.6-inch, 480-by-800-pixel glass touch screen is resistive, since Windows Mobile doesn’t support capacitive screens, but it still felt very responsive.
Since it’s a true world phone, the Imagio is a quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band HSDPA (850/1900/2100 MHz), and dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz) device with Wi-Fi. Voice calls sound crisp, loud, and clear—just like all recent Verizon phones I’ve tested. Reception was also pretty strong; my reference BlackBerry Curve 8330 on Verizon struggled to pick up EV-DO in a few rural spots, whereas the Imagio had no problem giving me two or three solid bars outdoors (and none indoors, but it could still make calls). Calls through a Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset sounded fine. The speakerphone could use some more gain, but it’s OK. The battery life was also good at 5 hours and 49 minutes.
